Water Retention vs Body Fat: Why You Feel Puffy and Bloated

You wake up with a puffy face, your rings feel tight and the scale says you're 1.5 kg heavier than yesterday. Before you panic, that overnight jump is often water retention, not fat.
Water retention happens when extra fluid builds up in your body's tissues. It can leave you feeling bloated and swollen, and it shows up on the scale fast. The good news is that, unlike body fat, water retention usually comes and goes within a few days.
Water retention vs body fat: how to tell them apart
- Speed. Water weight can appear overnight. Fat builds up slowly over weeks and months.
- Feel. Fluid makes skin look puffy and feel tight, often in the face, hands, belly, ankles and feet. Fat feels soft and stays put.
- Look. Cleveland Clinic describes swollen skin that looks shiny and stretched, or feels tight.
- Daily swings. Water weight rises and falls from day to day. Fat changes only gradually.
What causes water retention?
Too much salt
Your body holds on to water to keep its sodium levels balanced. Instant noodles, soy sauce, belacan, processed meats and mamak gravies are all high in salt. The NHS says adults should have no more than 6 g of salt a day, around one level teaspoon in total.
A big carb day
Your body stores carbohydrate as glycogen, and glycogen is stored together with water. That's why a weekend of nasi lemak, roti canai and kuih can push the scale up quickly, even if you haven't gained much fat.
Hormone changes
Many women notice water retention in the days before their period, when shifting hormones make the body hold on to more fluid. It usually eases once the period starts.
Sitting or standing for hours
Long drives, flights or a full day at the desk let fluid pool in your legs and ankles. The NHS lists staying in one position for a long time among the common causes of swelling, along with eating too much salt.
Not drinking enough
It sounds backwards, but when you drink too little, your body tends to hang on to the water it already has. In our hot, humid weather, it's easy to fall behind without noticing.
Is water retention harmful?
Short-term water retention after a salty meal or a long flight is usually harmless and settles by itself. But ongoing swelling can be a sign of a problem with the heart, kidneys or liver, so it shouldn't be ignored.
See a doctor if the swelling hasn't improved after a few days, keeps getting worse, or affects only one leg. Get urgent help if swelling comes with chest pain or shortness of breath.
Reading your scale the smart way
Look at the pattern, not one number. If the scale jumped after a salty or rich meal, a long flight or right before your period, and your body feels puffy, it's probably water retention.
Weigh yourself at the same time each morning, after the toilet and before breakfast, and track the weekly trend. Still feel puffy, even with good habits?
Many of our customers tell us they cut back on salt and drink more water, yet still feel bloated and puffy by the evening. That's when some add extra support alongside their routine.
