How to Lose Water Weight Naturally: 7 Safe Ways

Bananas, papaya, spinach, sweet potato, tempeh and lime water on a kitchen counter to help lose water weight

The scale went up two kilos after a long weekend of kenduri food, and your ankles feel tight. If you want to lose water weight safely, the answer is usually in your daily habits, not a crash diet.

Water weight is extra fluid your body holds on to, often after salty meals, a lot of carbs, hormone changes or long hours of sitting. Not sure if it's water or fat? Start with our guide to water retention vs body fat. Then use these steps to lose water weight the healthy way.

7 ways to lose water weight naturally

1. Cut back on salt

Salt is the biggest driver of water weight. Go easy on instant noodles, soy sauce, processed meat and gravy-heavy mamak meals, and taste before you add more. The NHS sets a limit of 6 g of salt a day for adults, about one level teaspoon in total.

2. Drink more water, not less

It sounds odd, but staying well hydrated tells your body it doesn't need to store extra fluid. Keep a bottle at your desk and sip throughout the day, especially in our hot, humid weather. It's one of the simplest ways to lose water weight.

3. Eat more potassium-rich foods

Potassium helps balance the sodium in your body. Bananas, papaya, spinach (bayam), sweet potato and tempeh are easy local picks. You can look up how much each food contains in the Malaysian Food Composition Database.

4. Move every day

Exercise gets your circulation going and helps fluid move out of your legs, and you lose some water through sweat too. A brisk 30-minute walk around the taman or a short swim is enough to help you lose water weight.

5. Get up often, and put your feet up

If you sit or stand all day, get up and walk around at least once an hour. Cleveland Clinic suggests raising your legs and feet when you can, to help fluid drain. A pillow under your feet while you watch TV works well.

6. Go easy on refined carbs

Your body stores carbohydrate together with water, so a heavy day of white rice, roti and kuih can show up on the scale. Swap some of it for vegetables and protein, especially at dinner, and many people lose water weight within a few days.

7. Limit alcohol and sweet drinks

Alcohol and sugary drinks can leave you dehydrated and bloated the next morning. Choose plain water, soda water with lime or teh o kosong instead, and keep sweet drinks for special occasions.

How fast can you lose water weight?

Most people see the scale settle within a few days to a week once they cut back on salt and carbs and stay active. Remember, it's water, not fat. Real fat loss is slower and comes from steady habits over weeks and months.

Track your weight at the same time each morning and look at the weekly trend, not one day's number.

When to see a doctor

Don't try to treat lasting swelling at home. The NHS advises seeing a doctor if swelling hasn't improved after a few days, gets worse, or affects only one leg. Get urgent help if it comes with chest pain or shortness of breath.

Want extra help to lose water weight?

Many of our customers tell us they've cut back on salt and drink plenty of water, yet still feel puffy by the end of the day. That's when some add extra support alongside their routine.
